Just For Mom

Mother's Day this year is May 8th, the earliest it could be as it's always celebrated on the spring month's second Sunday. While of course we subscribe to the idea of honouring Mom all year long, it gives us a great reason to strengthen an already close relationship, or perhaps just the opportunity to reach out and clear the air after a period of tension. Either way, nothing helps like offering her a little present, sharing a great meal, or even spoiling her just a little; our guess is she more than deserves it! To help in the homestretch, here are our Top 10 giftables made up of things and ideas both new and noted that she's bound to appreciate. For the object yes, but even more because it comes from you.

Ziggit Clip-On Accessories, various prices, sold online at
Mom will really dig this stylishly novel way of expressing her online savvy on the outside. Ziggit, a new accessory brand proudly born in Montreal just hit the streets with stainless steel clip-on accessories that allow you to customize anything from a shoelace to a bra strap with fun letters, numbers, and symbols in original fonts and emoji designs. We <3 #ziggitstyle!

Jennifer Lopez Jewelry Collection, various pricessold at Bijouteries Lavigueur (several locations), and LSM (6850 Blvd. Louis-H. La Fontaine)
For those moms we think of as feminine, raw, and powerful, there's our girl JLo's edgy new collection that merges the sophistication of sultry pearls with a hint of glam rock into an array of hand-set, diamond-cut cubic zirconia charms. Along with bracelets and necklaces the grouping is part of the larger Endless Jewelry's 'choose-combine-create' concept to mix and match your pieces for any occasion, mood, or outfit.

Pretty Ballerinas, 392 Victoria Ave, Westmount, 514-489-3030.
Since opening in 2009, this pretty slice of a store in Westmount's posh Victoria Village remains Canada's only physical outpost of beloved Minorcan footwear maker, and has been doing brisk business thanks to a sharp attention to construction and eye-catching styles combining patterns and materials in truly unique ways. For Mother's Day, they invite you to think 'like mother, like daughter' and propose several pieces from the spring/summer '16 collection that we can just imagine you borrowing from one another often.  We particularly like these elegant pairs in jewelled-toed black ($489) and two-tone with quilt detail ($189).

Nivea Q10plus, available in major pharmacies, supermarkets, and superstores.
Since creating a first breakthrough face cream in 1911, Nivea's profound expertise on the properties and benefits of energy coenzyme Q10 has been matched by an ever-growing public following, over time making it the world's leading anti-ageing skincare brand. From a complete range our go-to staples are:

Anti-Wrinkle Day Cream, $19.49, a powerful formula with SPF 30 that effectively works against fine lines and wrinkles with Q10 and creatine similar to that found in the skin. The dual result is a visible reduction in the look of wrinkles and skin that is intensively moisturized for an overall younger appearance.

Q10plus Serum Pearls, $19.49, a pioneering technology harnessing freshly activated pearls to transform the look of your skin with a refined complexion. Enriched with hyaluronic acid, it silky texture feels especially pleasant as it smoothes and softens skin's surface and creates the perfect base on which to apply day or night cream.

Reitmans Striped T-Shirts, $36, sold in stores and at
A homegrown Montreal success story, Reitmans was founded in 1926 by Herman and Sarah Reitman, growing from modest beginnings with one store on St.Laurent Blvd. to Canada's largest women's specialty retailer. Made of rayon, elastane, and polyester, these versatile Ts caught our eye with their flattering sleeve length and neckline. Perfectly in keeping with the Reitmans philosophy of practical, affordable fashion, they can be worn equally well with a skirt or casual pants.

Hands Le Gourmet by Bleu Lavande, $40, sold on and in selected drugstore and retail partners.
For Moms who love lavender this gift set falls into the 'wouldn't think of buying for myself but love to receive' category, and incorporates the refreshing properties of orange and lemon essential oils and soothing qualities of lavender to blissfully pamper your hands. The hand soap not only smells delicious, but is antibacterial, cleansing, and non-irritating, while the cream is an intensive treatment against dryness, restoring softness with grape seed oil and shea butter. Oh, and it helps strengthen brittle nails too.

Maison Birks, shop online at or various locations across Canada.
After paring down its product categories to include only jewelry and watches, and coming out with hipper, price-accessible lines worn by homegrown artists, actors, and ever-fashionable Sophie Grégoire Trudeau, Canada's grand jeweler has enjoyed a noted image refresh that's striking just the right chord with consumers.  From our two favourite collections, Rock & Pearl and Bee Chic, the following pieces caught our eye for their cool yet refined design and effortless way Mom can mix into what she already wears.

Sterling Silver and White Quartz Stud Earrings, $325

Sterling Silver Blue Topaz Ring, $325,

Rock & Pearl Ring, $275, available in sizes 5-9.

Rock & Pearl Bracelet, $275.

'Me-Time' for Mom...
We know she's already taking care of others, so it's high time to give it back to her with a day of precious time to herself. And where better to indulge in a little self-love than at one of the city's pamper-perfect spas. From the plethora of places and treatments available around town, these are the three where we could easily spend all of that special Sunday, or any day of the year for that matter.

The Ritz Carlton's Spa St.James,1228 Sherbrooke St. W. 514-844-4590.
Compounding its title as Canada's 'Top City Hotel' at the 2015 Travel and Leisure World's Best Awards, the city's landmark Ritz-Carlton now lays claim to its very first full-service in-house spa thanks to the Spa St.James closing up on Crescent St. and moving in a couple months ago. From a couple Mother's Day promotions on offer, this is one we like a lot: with the purchase of a Rose Hydrator Cocoon ($225), a full body scrub and hydrating mud wrap done with aromatherapy products, an Instant Glow Facial ($95) is complimentary.  3 hours of pure bliss and no better way to say 'Thanks for everything'.

Bota Bota, corner McGill St. and de la Commune W.,, 514-284-0333.
The city's one and only spa getaway on the water is offering a Bathe and Brunch package ($80pp) that includes access to the baths, gourmet brunch, and mimosa, while the Kobido facial (90 mins. $145) is perfect for those 'empress'  Moms. Dating back to Japan in 1472, it stimulates circulation in the face and neck as it releases muscle tension that contribute to wrinkles.  There are treatments for mothers-to-be and, for those hard-to-buy-for, there's always a gift card with cash value so she can plan her own perfect day.

Halotherapy, at Elite Laser, 1 Westmount Square, Mall Level,
Contrary to how it sounds, this isn't a futuristic treatment designed to make her more angelic than she already is (not even possible, right?), but rather involves exposure to minute salt particles that are dispersed into a special room built out of Himalayan salt bricks. Spreading like wildfire to LA, New York, and Miami, the first salt rooms of their kind in Montreal recently launched at Westmount's Elite Laser, and are where you can unwind, fully clothed, for 30-45 mins ($45) while the halogenerator grinds up and pumps out pharmaceutical grade salt which is inhaled deep down into the lungs and respiratory passages. Expect a sense of calmness and serenity while relieving inflammation, loosening congestion and breathing easier.
