Mediterranean chic, grounded by traditional Italian.
Veteran and award-winning chef Marino Tavares makes waves at Restaurant MKT’s official opening.


Nestled in the heart of the downtown core’s financial district, Restaurant MKT’s official opening drew a diverse crowd undeterred by the light rain, who were also well-rewarded by a sophisticated cocktail dinner featuring a smattering of menu items to sample.



The main area of the restaurant had a chic Mediterranean night club vibe; there was an oyster bar prominently displayed, warm, sand-coloured hardwood floors, accents of pale blue throughout including the glow of pop-up tables, and attractive wait staff ready to accept drink orders or check coats. A saxophone player floated around the room, playing in tandem with the thrumming house music.

Toward the back, the PR mavens, food bloggers, and businessmen curiously observed another scene: the man of the hour, chef Tavares bustling in and out of the kitchen, and laying out beautiful wooden boards of charcuteries onto the family-style trestle table and identified them to the hungry on-lookers. Meats hung proudly in the glass locker next to the open kitchen where sous-chefs hurriedly basted and sliced what would become tender porchetta sandwiches. Fresh market vegetables were mounded up in wooden crates next to a large, old-fashioned scale, a nod to the restaurant’s approach to fresh, market variety food.



"This time, it's the table that does the talking" Tavares said of his cuisine, and it certainly did. There were salty cured meats with soft yeasty bread, sweet fleshy shrimp cocktails, creamy chunks of salmon tartar, mouth-watering samples of rich, earthy risotto, and delicate oysters paired with lemon. All fared well with the Prosecco being served in traditional champagne coupes.
