MTL Resto: Le Richmond puts on its Sunday best

Come springtime, Griffintown’s uber-cool LeRichmond does something of a ‘pop-up’ Sunday brunch offering a seasonal maple-themed menu to be enjoyed in the room’s well-established smooth and sexy ambience – picture a DJ-driven day-party vibe, attractive wait staff, and a buzzing clientele of MTL’s young and connected. 

Sip champagne mimosas with a selection of graciously offered viennoiseries, namely croissants and cinnamon danish with raisins, chocolatines, raspberry preserves and homemade peanut butter, before moving on to starters that offer an array of sharing options.

We’d recommend the chicken liver mousse served with maple jelly, carrot marmalade and grilled bread, or else 2 jumbo shrimp wrapped served on a spicy mayo sauce and wrapped in sweet and smoky bacon!

Among mains there is something for everyone – from classic ‘steak and egg’ to a Nagano pork chop to crisp maple French toast. Our three faves:

  • The lobster benedict: the star of the entire menu consists of a pancetta, caviar, and tarragon gelée mixture holding together generous lobster chunks and crowned with poached eggs, all sitting atop a couple rounds of thick polenta bread. Break the egg over the lobster mixture for a truly swoon-worthy flavour combination.

  • The fois gras: an awesome sweet and savoury marriage of maple syrup, blood pudding, vincotto, a poached egg, and show-stealing lobe of foie gras, perfectly cooked and tender. 

  • Le Richmond: a classic with eggs as you like them, sticky (rather than saucy) baked beans, sausage, and house potatoes, and a wedge of excellent homemade tourtière.  Compared to the other dishes this one was somewhat standard fare, but for the standout meat pie.

To finish off, throw on one of the blankets provided and head to the large wooden terrasse for some ‘de rigueur’ maple taffy on snow, turned up a notch with a glass of warm house-mulled wine, shots of Jamieson and, for the kid in all of us, sticks of cotton candy.

Only 3 Sundays remain (until April 12th) to take advantage of this special spring menu and tables fill up fast; resos are a must or else try snagging a spot at the bar in the center of the action.

Adding to Griffintown’s deserved title as one of the city’s most hip and happening neighbourhoods will be this May’s arrival of le Marché Richmond in a space next door to the restaurant and the same ‘contemporary industrial’ design we love.

Think of NYC’s famous Eataly touching down in Montreal, and stay tuned for a 6000 sq. ft. emporium of fine imported products, Italian-inspired bistro, and personalized catering service: once an order is placed it can be brought directly to your car – perfect as a drive-by on the way up to the cottage for the weekend, or if you find yourself entertaining for eight people at home.
