We must say we were intrigued to receive an invitation to the press cocktail of Le Pandore, as it revealed nothing about what to expect. We knew off the bat given the address, the 2-22 building at St. Laurent and Ste. Catherine that they would have their work cut out for them, as restaurant Le St.Cyr, located on the ground floor in the same complex, recently closed its doors and has been replaced by Old Montreal’s Accords Wine Bar offshoot, Accords Bistro

Perched atop the building, Le Pandore is accessible only by entering the lobby of the complex and taking the elevator to the 5th floor. Although we had a bit of difficulty finding it, everything made sense once we stepped off into the space and the veil of mystery was lifted to reveal a true feast for the senses.

Aside from the flowing bubbly, ubiquitous oyster bar and flavorful hors d’oeuvres, the city’s new eat/drink/entertainment space is a mini ‘place des arts’ of its own, with several small stages set up along 2 walls surrounded by lounge/den-like seating, with a drink menu featuring original cocktails and punch recipes served in large bowls to be shared while taking in any manner of live performances. The night of our event counted several impressive shows including a bass violinist, awe-inspiring contortionist, burlesque ladies, and an instrumental set with what looked like a giant sitar.

Overall, the vibe is sultry and the place designed to indulge all of the vices released by its namesake (for those not up on their Greek mythology, Pandora, impelled by her curiosity, opened the jar she was given as a wedding gift and all the evil it contained escaped and spread over the earth).

For a change of scenery you can escape to the open and airy rooftop terrasse, complete with killer views of the city and, depending on how late the kitchen goes and the offering, Le Pandore will also be a boon to concert and theatregoers in the Quartier des spectacles, as we’ve always felt there to be a lack of decent options in the neighborhood, particularly post-show.
