With the city’s real estate development now rivaling that of Toronto and New York, new projects are turning to their own form of ‘buildertainment’ - splashy launch parties that draw a mix of press, good-looking professionals, agents, and interested potential buyers.

Free-flowing champers, oyster bars, catered hors d’oeuvres, live DJs, entertainment, celeb sightings, and photo ops are now the norm for developers striving for the right kind of buzz in an increasingly competitive and crowded market.

Of course it helps when a new start brings with it an established global lifestyle brand, as is the case with the recent midweek opening of Yoo Montreal at Ottawa and Young streets in ever-burgeoning Griffintown.

A collaboration between developer British developer John Hitchcox and internationally acclaimed designer Philippe Starck, the residential/hotel design company counts no less than 63 projects in 48 cities and 29 countries in its portfolio, and is based on creating consumer-focused (hence the name), design-driven living spaces.

After catching up with some familiar faces, we made our way into the marketing suite, and were immediately taken with the building’s proposed scale model, and plans viewable on large touch screens. The concrete and glass structure had an air of South Beach, with glass-enclosed terraces that let in the maximum amount of light.

Sadly, no model units were installed for us to have a closer look, but we had the chance to catch-up with Anick Truong, realtor with Sothebys who let us in on the 411: 20 stories comprising 91 units made up of studios (384 sq.ft.), 2-bedroom (1314 sq. ft.) and 3-bedroom (1647 sq.ft) units, finished off with a penthouse that spans the entire top floor of the building - an impressive 3200 square feet customizable down to the detail, most likely with Mr. Starck himself.  Be-yoo-tiful!
