The venerable Birks flagship store at Philips Square was a hive of activity last week as the maison hosted a swish cocktail to commemorate its 135th anniversary with a select mix of the city’s journalists, bloggers, and ‘fashionalities’ of the social scene in attendance.

The lively buzz was palpable as Eva Hartling, VP Marketing and Communications for the Group, welcomed attendees into the festive garden-themed space that featured a couple signature bars – one for the refreshing Bees Knees cocktail (vodka, lemon juice, honey, vanilla extract), and one for your nails courtesy of Essie, along with some delectable treats.

But this was a party with a purpose as the celebration focused on social responsibility, specifically the company’s newest partnership with the Honey Bee Research Centre (HBRC) at the University of Guelph, particularly on raising awareness around the recent dramatic decrease of bee colonies in North America and Europe, and on their conservation.

To mark the occasion, the house has designed 3 attractive bee-themed collections – Bee Chic, Bee Sweet, and Busy Bee, that include chain pendants, rings, and earrings, all with various design plays on the six-sided honeycomb shape, and made of yellow gold, silver, gemstones, and diamonds.

Overall the pieces are pretty, with many of them price-accessible for a fine jewelry collection.  Taking social responsibility a step further, Birks will also donate 10% of sales of one of the silver pendants to the HBRC.

Francis Guindon, the maison’s new PR and Communications Director, even let us in on some insider scoop when we learned that the store has actually installed beehives on the roof of the building, with the help of urban beekeeping experts Alvéole, as well as a nectar-rich floral façade through prominent landscape design firm, Topia. Needless to say that once the weather warms up it will be quite impressive to witness this operation in action.

What can we say? Pretty sweet for Montreal’s reigning jewelry queen!
