Among the different types of fundraisers we run across on our city’s vibrant benefit scene, the gastronomic ones are not only personal favorites, but also a chance to witness true win-win-win synergy in action – organizers draw great turnouts, not to mention net proceeds, by associating with some of the city’s top restaurants. These businesses get to showcase their talent and stay top of mind for customers, and guests get to partake in a top-shelf culinary adventure.

It was a recent Wednesday when the Israel Cancer Research Fund (ICRF)’s New Leadership Division made the call, and a slew of Montreal’s young professionals, foodies, philanthropists, and social bloggers answered, gathering at 1234 de la Montagne for the third annual Taste For Life soirée.

Recently christened Le Cinq, the 2-level retro-glam space was turned out into a buffet feast as we sampled sushi from Ryu, classic smoked meat from Lesters (hope yours truly wasn’t caught on camera inhaling half a sandwich!), and the famous steak/Monte Carlo potatoes from Moishes.

On hand were also Le Gros Jambon, Joverse (pulled pork taco heaven) Monsieur (the second banner, along with Miss Prêt-a-Manger, for caterer-turned-pro-restaurateur Kim Lallouz), Le Richmond, Sel Gras, Suwu, and Anabel, an Outremont wine bar that’s been on our radar for a while - partner David Chano’s warm greeting reminded us to book a table here soon.

Somehow we managed to save (or simply MAKE) room for dessert, and were not disappointed by Pamela and Amanda Massi’s (aka Twins Delight) addictive cookies, Beaver Tails, Squish candy and Swurl frozen yogurt.

While the space proved trying at times with the small, packed rooms difficult to navigate around food stations with plate and glass in hand, a pretty 2nd floor terrasse overlooking de la Montagne helped to greatly relieve congestion.

And if all that gourmet grub wasn’t enough, live DJ’s Adrien Malka and Tiguru set the ambience, and a silent auction loaded with crave-worthy items, namely a Kiehl’s For Men skincare gift box, Just for Laughs tickets, a diamond heart from Delmar, signed PK Subban sports apparel, Michael Bublé concert tickets, a VIP package to the ICRF Gala featuring nine-time Grammy Award winner John Legend (CO-VE-TED), and a Blackout Gym membership completed a most notable evening. And bought me at least a couple hours on the treadmill the next day!
