As the expansion of ‘hot now’ neighborhoods continues to stretch further out from all angles of the city core, one garnering a lot of the buzz is the mucho-revitalized Hochelaga-Maisonneuve, or HOMA. While only a few years ago you’d need a good reason to visit this east-end borough, today the mobile young professional set is moving in, while ‘must hit’ dining/party destinations that retain the convivial vibe from its working class roots are cropping up everywhere.

Fueling this transformation, apart from the new condo projects going up at breakneck speed, is the vision of Montreal’s new ‘resto-preneurs’ – young and charismatic individuals, with an abundance of passion for their ‘quartier’ and product, not to mention a knack for drawing the cool crowd. One such individual is Mathieu Ménard owner of Bar Le Chasseur and host of a tremendously fun place to be on any given night.

This was evident as we attended a recent VIP evening at the restaurant to present the new menu, and sample both the entrées and several custom cocktails featuring the evening’s partner, Jack Daniel’s. We were then each given a ticket to vote for our favorite drink. Mine? Bar master Cedrick’s tasty and inventive concoction of Jack, calvados, maple-hibiscus syrup, spicy ginger, and soda.

Later in the evening, I had a chance to speak with Mr. Ménard about the changes - slightly larger portions and lower prices (all good there!), and without a lot of the enhancers that can render a dish overly ambitious and actually mask what you’re eating.

Rather, the focus will rest on quality-driven, locally sourced items that highlight not only the Quebec ‘terroir’, but also the talent of chef Pascal Lafond (formerly of Europea, Pullman, and Café des Éclusiers). A two-course lunch table d’hôte topping out at 19$, and a three-course dinner for 35$ round out the options.

To make an evening out of it, reserve on a Friday or Saturday night after 8PM as a DJ takes over and the bar livens up tenfold. Oh, and book well in advance - with the adjoining terrasse that just opened out front this place is already in ‘impossible-table-to-snag’ territory.
