A Knockout of a Program! Piknic Electronik Unveils Its Plans to Punch Up the Summer

Montreal: Thursday, May 1st, 2014 - Piknic Electronik reveals its programming for the 23 events it has in store for this summer, between May 18th and September 21st. For its 12th edition, Piknic proposes an intoxicating cocktail of DJs and producers guaranteed to add that requisite punch to your sunny Sundays under the Calder of Parc Jean-Drapeau. Here are the international and local ingredients of the taste-tested recipe concocted for this new season, to be consumed without moderation and in proportions of your choosing.

Generous Pints of English Ale
Of all the international guests who'll be gracing the Piknic stage this summer, none is more emblematic of electronic music's next wave than the UK contingent.  The wildly popular genre-bending producer Jamie xx, mastermind beatmaker behind international indie-darlings The xx, is being presented in collaboration with I Love Neon. Hyperdub founder Kode9 arrives for one of his notoriously wide-ranging DJ sets. Also coming to Parc Jean-Drapeau is next-big-thing Daniel Avery, a Fabric Club resident whose debut album Drone Logic has been drawing comparisons to everyone from Chemical Brothers to Carl Craig. Hot on his heels is new producer Leon Vynehall whose debut album Music for the Uninvited is already being touted as one of 2014's best.

Aus Music, an imprint whose forward-leaning tastes have influenced a generation of bass, garage, & house fusion, arrives this summer for a much-anticipated showcase featuring founder Will Saul and Midland. The UK selection also features Canadian expat Heidi (Get Physical), best known for her long-running association with BBC Radio 1 program In New DJ's We Trust, headlining her globetrotting Jackathon event.

Barrelfuls of French Red
The Piknic 2014 spotlight has also set its sights on France's wildfire techno community, which has been pumping out some of the most energetic and pulsating BPMs in the world recently. At the forefront of this movement is producer Sébastien Léger, who returns to the Calder this summer with a Mistakes Music showcase featuring a live set by his protégé Joachim Pastor. The opening weekend double-header also celebrates the 20th anniversary of Brest's Astropolis Festival. For their Montreal reunion, the French festival will highlight Infiné label founder Agoria; newer producers Oniris and Madben, both heralded by Laurent Garnier as ones to watch; and Astropolis resident DJs Sonic Crew. Throughout the summer, Montreal will have the pleasure of catching appearances by up-and-coming producer Bobmo, as well as a ClekClekBoom label showcase (presented in collaboration with MEG Montreal), featuring French FriesManaré, and Aleqs Notal. French duo Masomenos, meanwhile, takes part in Montreal producer Ohm Hourani'Anoma label showcase, underlining the continued participation between French and Quebecois artists.

American Bourbon and Fine Spirits from the Old Continent
As always, Piknic continues to highlight the people who are shaping the globe's pockets of club-culture productivity in exciting ways. The first event of the year launches with Crew Love, a showcase featuring Soul ClapWolf + Lamb, and Slow Hands, all of who specialize in a seductive slow-mo brand of disco-tinted house brewing on the East Coast. Detroit-via Berlin tech-funk prodigyJimmy Edgar represents the latest from techno's founding city. Rising from the West Coast into the club stratosphere is young Dirtybirdcrew DJ/producer J. Phlip. Meanwhile, the rest of Europe offers up the talents of German hazy techno producerAppelscal, high-octane duo Schlachthofbronx, and Mathias Zimmerman, while Norwegian producer Cashmere Cat and Belgium's Surfing Leons headline a special Samouraïs des Jungles Urbaines showcase.

The Inimitable Taste of Local Ingredients
And this bounty of talent doesn't even begin to tap into the many local DJs and producers who make up the majority of the season's programming, and often its most exciting moments. This summer, Piknic will host the many crews and collectives who've sprung to life within Montreal's clubs to promote vibrant new musical directions of their own. Whether it's the return of the hip-hop-infused 10Kilos.US, the minimal techno of the Hushlamb collective, the tenth anniversary of Planet Breaks, the soulful house music of the Mile End Records family, the bass manifestations of the Knife & Fork crew, the uber-collectors at Music Is My Sanctuary, or the future house of Saintwoods, DJs and producers in Montreal have learned that united under a musical mandate, they stand stronger.

Montreal circa 2014 is on fire with local club talent! And while many of the collectives on showcase this year keep abreast of the latest Western trends, several others have invested their efforts in digging out obscurities from around the world and freshening them up for local audiences. The Canicule Tropicale trio of DJs mines the vinyl bins of Africa, Latin America, and Caribbean for intoxicating journeys in tropical rhythms, while DJ duo Body Meta fuses afrobeat discoveries with disco edits and early house. DJ Doc and DJ Chuck have made it their mission to expose South Africa's house scene to the world.

Of course, there are those DJs and producers upon whom today's scene was built, and Piknic lays out the red carpet for their talents as always. From Misstress Barbara to Poirier, from Mightykat and Miguel Graça to Mir and The One Tash, the DJs who first inspired the plethora of new crews return to Piknic with new records up their sleeves.

Summer Friends Last Forever
Montreal collaborations abound across the programming package. On June 1stMUTEK returns once again for its traditional Sunday in the park with critically acclaimed techno producers Move D (DE) and Donato Dozzy (IT), as well as a few last-minute curator's surprises culled from their 15th anniversary line-up. On June 22nd, Piknic continues its St. Jean-Baptiste weekend ritual of celebrating long-running contributors to Montreal's electronic-music development. This year, the focus is on minimal techno mainstay Archipel Musique. Several collaborations will have their programming confirmations announced in the coming weeks. On June 28th, Parc Jean-Drapeau welcomes the festival's Piknic Barcelona counterparts for a special cross-Atlantic exchange. July 5th and 12th will see Piknic return to the Weekends of the World pavilion. Pop Montreal will curate a stage on September 21st.
