The Kickoff - Le Grand Soir

The official igniter to Grand Prix weekend is always Thursday evening’s Grand Soir, back at the Arsenal Complex for the second year, and chaired by Mr. Bernard Ecclestone, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Formula One Management Ltd; and Mr. Marcel Aubut, Senior partner at Heenan Blaikie and President of the Canadian Olympic Committee.

While the chic soirée brings out the A-list sightings from the worlds of business, fashion, and sports, not to mention free-flowing bubbly, fast cars, and a Mercedes-Benz fashion show produced by none other than Hans Koechling of The Image Is…, it’s noteworthy to mention that all proceeds go to the Canadian Olympic Foundation and to the Fondation de l’Hôpital du Sacré-Coeur de Montréal.

Glitz at the Ritz + FF1 Porsche

The Friday night turned out to be a double-booking beginning with what was far and away the highlight event of this year’s F1 festivities - the Ritz Carlton’s inaugural Garden Fête, in collaboration with McLaren, Formula Tours, and HoltRenfrew.

The hotel more than hit all the high notes with the beautiful décor of the re-furbished Palm Court and Oval Room, an open champagne bar courtesy of Moët, fashion show by Holt’s, a tasting of the kitchen’s delectable dishes which continued out into the garden and, perhaps most impressive, a dessert station (or rather edible installation oeuvre!) by Serge Halbardier, the hotel’s pastry chef. Laid out along a section of the Palm Court, the spread wowed with its artistry, and featured perfect bite-sized creations on multi-tiered trays; making our way through it was like a stroll through gourmet candy land – as original as it was delicious!

From there it was on to the FF1 party at the Montreal Science Center. Sponsored by Martini and Porsche, this one was a standout if only for the invitation – a numbered access card you had to register online in order to gain access to the event.

Debuting in 2009, the unique organization holds three premier events per year between Toronto and Montreal, which integrate into the high octane social circuit of film, fashion, and racing, and are geared to the young professional party set who descend upon, you guessed it, the Toronto International Film Festival, Toronto Fashion Week, and the Montreal Formula 1 Grand Prix.
