Since its inaugural edition in 1994, Montreal’s Mondial de la bière has grown from a relatively humble affair of 20 000 people on the Place des Arts esplanade, to an entity exponentially greater in both the number of exhibitors and attendees.

Entering its 20th year, the festival had once again outgrown its home at Windsor Station, and made the move to digs more befitting its size and prominence in the area of beer sampling and discovery – the immense Palais des Congrès

As with Windsor Station, the site encompassed both an indoor and outdoor section, the latter in the esplanade between Chenneville and Côté streets. While the increased square footage certainly made for improved, airy circulation around the kiosks indoors, access to the esplanade was only possible by crossing through Viger Hall, and this only after downing or leaving behind any beer you had in your mug, and concealing it in one of the black bags provided. Along the walk I couldn’t help but become nostalgic for the beer-buzzed hominess of the Windsor Station days, jam-packed throngs and all.

The sampling system remained as good value and as efficient as in previous years, with the tasting beer mug going for 10$, and coupons costing 1$ each. Tastings of 3-4 ounces were redeemed for 2 - 6 coupons for most brands.
