The second half of the opera’s 2012-2013 season began with a production of Johann Strauss II’s comical 1874 operetta, Die Fledermaus, or The Bat.  Known as the Waltz King, the prolific composer enjoyed much popular success during his day thanks to the easy and accessible pieces he brought to both dance and light opera.

This first Quebec production in ten years featured our own king, of the stage this time, in master tenor Marc Hervieux heading an all-Canadian cast for the performance. Stage director Oriol Tomas effectively transposed the setting from 19th century Vienna to 1930s Montreal; rendering it immediately recognizable thanks to the Westmount mansion with direct views of the Mount Royal cross, and the swinging, posh nightclubs of the day.   Used to highlight the narrative in the opera’s three acts, the distinct sets were among the show’s strongest points, and served as a rich backdrop for both the rousing ensemble performances as well as dramatic moments between two or three players.
