A never-fail option for office veterans, the coat does serious active duty on the front lines to keep the wind and rain at bay, and your suit dry too.  Not warm enough for cold or snowy conditions remember to retire yours once winter arrives.

Developed as an alternative to the long and cumbersome greatcoats worn by British and French soldiers during the First World War, credit for the updated design is a matter of fashion warfare as it’s claimed by both Burberry and Aquascutum.

While grounds exist for both camps, it’s really the variety of onscreen characters like Beatty’s Dick Tracy, and Bogart’s Rick Blaine in Casablanca which influenced both designers and the style set by imparting the coat with an air of self-assured control.  Peter Sellers’ Inspector Clouseau famously sported a trench that came off with a comical edge when paired with his ineptitude.  But serious or satirical, the coat’s ties to the military uniform continue to make it a favourite for styling professionals, battle scars and all.

This one's a favourite model from Rag + Bone.
